Dr. Drossman has been in academic medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine for 40 years and has committed his career to patients, the field of functional GI and motility disorders, and crossover areas of medicine, gastroenterology, and psychosomatic medicine and psychiatry.

With a passion for helping patients and teaching clinical and communication clinical skills, he trained with Dr. George Engel and became a charter fellow in the American Academy on Physician and Patient (now American Academy of Communication and HealthCare) that teaches academicians communication skills.  He has studied the clinical aspects of mind-body interactions and the biopsychosocial model, and has held more than $15 million in NIH and industry grants.

Dr. Drossman is an effective writer and communicator with more than 500 publications, having served as Associate Editor for Gastroenterology, the Gastroenterology Editor of the Merck Manual for 17 years, and the editorial board of journals in medicine, gastroenterology, and psychosomatic medicine.  He has built a successful academic career through leadership in national and international programs, many of which he created.

Dr. Drossman is recognized internationally as a teacher of communication skills and the doctor-patient relationship.  He earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, as well as completing postgraduate residencies and certification in internal medicine, additional fellowship training in psychosocial medicine and fellowships and certification in Gastroenterology.  Some of Dr. Drossman’s specific accomplishments follow:

  • Received national research, mentoring, education, and clinical awards from the American Gastroenterology Association, American College of Gastroenterology, American Psychosomatic Society, and other international organizations
  • Founder and past president of the Functional Brain Gut Research Group
  • Past President of the American Psychosomatic Society
  • Associate Editor of Gastroenterology and leadership positions in American Gastroenterology Association and American College of Gastroenterology
  • Has given lectures and workshops globally and received honorary degrees and awards from Eastern Europe, Asia and Latin America as well as Western countries
  • Founder and Co-director of the UNC Center for Functional GI and Motility Disorders (www.med.unc.edu/ibs) which is one of the most recognized and respected centers for these disorders
  • Institute of Medicine Committees on Gulf War and Health in 2008, 2010 and in 2012
  • Founder and President of the Rome Foundation (www.theromefoundation.org), an international non-profit academic organization whose mission is to improve the lives of people with functional GI disorders through education and research, and senior editor of Rome I, II, III and IV
  • Board of Directors and scientific committee chair of the International Foundation for Functional GI Disorders (www.iffgd.org), an international patient education and advocacy group for these disorders. IFFGD is a Public Educational and advocacy group designated under the U.S. IRS code 501(c)(3). It is a nonprofit education and research organization dedicated to informing, assisting, and supporting people affected by gastrointestinal (GI) disorders. Dr. Drossman is the Program Director for their biennial international conferences.
