UNC Fellowship Rotation
The rotation will involve seeing patients with complex functional GI and motility disorders (FGIDs) often referred from out of state and from major referral centers. These patients have multiple co-morbidities and have failed usual treatments. The fellow will review the record, participate in the visits, and confer with faculty and staff on diagnostic and treatment options. The fellow will complete the consultation note in the electronic medical record. When feasible, the fellow will present and/or interview the patient during the functional GI conference. During this rotation, fellows will be provided with additional reading and videos to help gain a deeper background in 3 major areas: 1) communication skills, 2) functional GI and motility disorders, and 3) behavioral and psychotropic treatment methods.
The Goal for this rotation:
The GI Fellow must be able to provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the treatment of health problems and the promotion of health. The GI Fellows are expected to:
- Gather and synthesize essential and accurate information to define a patient’s clinical problem(s).
- Develop a comprehensive management plan for patients
The Objectives for this rotation:
- Synthesize the history of patients with complex functional GI & motility disorders via review of the medical records
- Apply the biopsychosocial model to the assessment & management of patients with complex functional GI & motility disorders
- Create a differential diagnosis for patients with complex functional GI & motility disorders
- Become familiar with the use of behavioral, psychopharmacological and pharmacological treatments used for patients with functional GI and motility disorders
