Chronic rectal pain known has chronic proctalgia is a steady, vague, dull ache which lasts 30 minutes or longer and is often worse with sitting.  Individuals with chronic proctalgia often have tightly contracted levator ani muscles and tenderness of these rectal muscles on examination.  Proctalgia fugax is another type of chronic rectal pain which is more sudden, lasts several seconds to up to 30 minutes, and then fully subsides between episodes.
