Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel disease that can affect any segment of the gastrointestinal tract from the mouth to the anus. Crohn’s disease typically causes inflammation through deep layers of the tissue which can lead to gastrointestinal ulcers, scarring, and fistulas or spreading of inflammation through the intestinal wall. The most commonly affected areas are the last past of the small intestine called the ileum and the colon. Signs and symptoms of Crohn’s disease include diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, blood in the stool, ulcers within the colon or the mouth, fever, weight loss, and fatigue. Individuals with Crohn’s disease may also experience joint pains, eye inflammation, and skin changes.
